A Somali-Canadian mother and daughter share their experiences as first and second-generation immigrants in Canada on their journey to belong.

Get to know the filmmaker:

1. What motivated you to make this film?
My experiences as a Nigerian immigrant in Canada, and my curiosity about the experiences of other immigrants as they adapt and try to create a home and community in a new land. It was my way of processing my journey while creating a space for others to do the same.

2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?
About 2 years.

3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
"Heart-wrenching" and "Heartwarming"

4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
Not an obstacle, but trimming the fat in editing to make sure that the story came across clearly.

5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
Pure joy and gratitude.

6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
As a young child watching TV - I didn't know what "it" was, I just knew that I wanted to do "it".

7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
Black Panther - definitely.

8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?
I have honestly had a great experience so far and I feel grateful - especially for the feedback video. So keep doing what you are doing.

9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?
I have actually not had any bad experiences so far with FilmFreeway, it's a great platform and I'm glad I stumbled upon it.

10. What is your favorite meal?
Nigerian Jollof Rice with assorted meat and plantain.

11. What is next for you? A new film?
A few film and creative projects are cooking. Right now, I am creating a podcast called Afros in the Diaspora which is a space where African and Black immigrants can come, chat, vent and share their experiences so that folks don't feel so isolated and alone on their journey. Stay tuned!
