Inclusion: The Story of the Americans with Disabilities Act
Directed by Shelly Simmons
Lack of accommodation in buildings and streets is challenging for persons with disabilities; lack of awareness on the part of society, more so. Thirty years after the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the film INCLUSION asks: Is America fully accessible? While people with disabilities are ready to engage wholeheartedly in all facets of life, they remain largely invisible in the public eye. INCLUSION presents the point of view of disabled activists and professionals, shining a spotlight on the work that remains -- and the shift in social consciousness that is needed -- for their full immersion in all activities. INCLUSION begins with the historic signing of the ADA, which followed on the heels of the hard-won fight of disability activists involving protest marches, a crawl up the steps of the U.S. Capitol, and the occupation of the Capitol. It segues to activists today talking about the current status of civil rights as they relate to accessibility, employment, and quality of life. By telling the story through the voices of persons with disabilities, INCLUSION reveals that the obstacle to their full integration is not their physical limitations, but the assumptions of the able-bodied.
