Get to know the filmmaker:

What motivated you to make this film?

It started with the initial understanding of a real plant which has an appearance very similar to a sunflower, but doesn't turn towards the sun. I saw how this as allegory could speak in several ways, and from there I worked on a story that would enhance these ideas, and add in other notions.

2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?

I spent just over four years on the animation and artwork, and another year sporadically working with the sound studio and musician, as they were also working on other projects.

3. How would you describe your film in two words!?

4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?

The ending to the film had a different look conveying a different key concept. I decided that it wasn't working and had to go back and change some of the backgrounds.

5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?

I thought it was fun. I also noticed one of the film's sub-themes in their reactions, being that I could catch a hint of some of their previous worldviews which influenced the lens by which they interpreted the film.

6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?

At the age of 23. I was taking a Graphic Arts course at the time, and there was a segment on animated film.

7. What film have you seen the most in your life?

The Last Starfighter. It's not at all my favorite film, but at a certain period in my life I watched it plenty of times. It spoke to me.

8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?

I think what you are doing is great. Perhaps forums where people can talk about the films, and the filmmakers can get on there and interact with them? Or maybe zoom meetings interacting with the films?

9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?

I like it. It is much more efficient than Withoutbox, or even any of the other new ones I have tried.

10. What is your favorite meal?

I actually really like the experience of having a good breakfast in a restaurant, while reading a book with a good coffee.

11. What is next for you? A new film?

I'm working on another animated film right now, and am also working with the sound studio on the foley and music for a short animated vignette. That should keep me busy for the next 3 years or so.
