ELEPHANT GYM - DEITIES' PARTY, 3min., Taiwan, Music Video
Directed by Che Yeh
This passage describes a music performance with the theme
of summoning deities. It combines Taiwanese traditional musical
instruments and modern music sounds and presents a scene
of prayer through the interaction of sound and deity statues.
During the performance, the boundary between reality and
illusion is blurred, and the audience wonders if they have
summoned the deities, or if the deities were summoning
them.

Get to know the filmmaker:
1. What motivated you to make this film?
CHE: Elephant Gym has always been my favorite band, and the drummer is also a classmate of the same department of my university. It was by chance that they were able to make their "Deities' Party" MV, and it happened that they had a need for VR 360, so we began to discuss how to create a surreal end-apocalyptic scene in a virtual space.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?
CHE: It took nearly half a year from the beginning of this project to its completion.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
CHE: Colorful darkness.
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
CHE: The 3D images of the Elephant Gym are shot using a technology called 4D views. Although it is a novel image shooting method, there are still many limitations and various tests are required in its use. Such as clothing, hairstyle, musical instrument color and other requirements for shooting, as well as the conversion with other 3D software in post-production, are all hard work.
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
CHE: I am very happy to be able to surprise the audience so much, because we just hope that this work can present a visual feast different from the real world.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
CHE: When I was in college, I just happened to choose the film department, but in the process of studying, I gradually realized that this is what I want to do even if I am good at it.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
CHE: Basically, I watch all kinds of videos, and of course there is no limit to the type of movies. The romance of the new wave, the weirdness of cult films, the interaction of VR films, and the cultural familiarity of Taiwanese films all made me deeply immersed in the world of images and became the nourishment for my creation.
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?
CHE: If one day there is an invitation for a physical screening, I can meet the audience and other creators, and receive other people's feelings and suggestions directly. I believe it will be a wonderful thing!
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?
CHE: Great.
10. What is your favorite meal?
CHE: Japanese cuisine.
11. What is next for you? A new film?
CHE: Recently, I am working on a project to move a virtual production into a physical performance in a theater. Like this film "Deities' Party" , I hope to expand the boundaries of virtuality and reality. It's the matter of making the audience look at the image from a different perspective, and even then see our world from a different perspective.
