Director Statement
As a beekeeper myself, I wanted to show that the mysterious art of beekeeping is alive and well. It's also vital to our survival on this planet that we help the bees to thrive. I wanted to show bees at their best using macros lenses and also putting microphones inside the hives to hear the bees making honey.
Get to know the filmmaker:
1. What motivated you to make this film?
The association was looking for ways to celebrate their Centenary and I suggested a film.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?
Probably about 5 months
3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
Honeybee importance
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
The unpredictable nature of bees - you have to remember that a hive has enough venom to kill you if you annoy them
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
That people were getting the message about the importance of bees
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
As a small child but I'd no idea how.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
Last of the Mohicans
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?
Introduce us to the producers and sales agents - and help us film makers understand what constitutes a good distribution deal for a short film and what is a rip off.
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?
Really good - although a small percentage of festivals don't bother to let you know if you've been selected or rejected. That rankles.
10. What is your favorite meal?
Chilli crab linguini followed by a lot of ice cream and good cheese & crackers.
11. What is next for you? A new film?
I've just finished a commission for a short film whose script won a competition. The prize for the writer was production, and I supplied script editing, directing and producing. I'm about to have an audio podcast released through Towton Audio about an American scientist in the 1800s.
