In a mining company town outside Pittsburgh, a 9-year-old boy's mother dies of a self-inflicted botched abortion. This tragedy leaves the narrator Tad Malinowski and his 6 siblings to deal with their alcoholic ogre of a father. Tad escapes and triumphs, but only after years of a tortured childhood.
