BATHWATER, 14min., Canada
Directed by Brian Nolin, Ian Nsenga
After his sister dies during an abortion, Blair kidnaps her husband, the doctor, and a judge to decide who’s responsible for this family tragedy: the husband who pressured her into it, or the doctor who went through with it.

Director Statement
In today’s quick paced world we are constantly being bombarded with news, social media and other people’s opinions throughout an already busy day. There seems to be no end to the complexity of controversies demanding one’s attention when we least expect it, often leaving us feeling conflicted and rushed to take a side.
But in the wondrous and engaging realm of cinema, there’s a fine grey line where black becomes white, a place where the inner chambers of the mind feel free to live vicariously through others and openly entertain the colourful possibilities of ‘what if that were me?’.
In Bathwater, we find ourselves safely looking into a dangerous situation and challenging ourselves to re-evaluate our own opinions.
STORY, SUBJECT MATTER AND THEME
On the surface, Bathwater comes across as a film about abortion, kidnapping, and murder. But beneath the surface we find a more subtle theme about how the power to end a life should not be taken lightly, especially when emotions and dogmas disguise themselves as facts.
Each character, coming with their own set of ethics and motives, is willing to go great lengths to find a way out of this life threatening situation. As an audience, we are privy to a more omnipotent view of what happens when we draw conclusions too quickly.
Being greatly influenced through the years by such classics as Brian Singer’s The Usual Suspects, Gregory Hoblit’s Primal Fear, and David Fincher’s Fight Club and The Game, we find ourselves intrigued over and over by characters who convince us of their strict moral compasses in behaving a certain way only to prove us wrong moments later by becoming a completely different creature.
In this vein, Bathwater initially appears to be a simple tale of revenge, but after delving deeper into the subject matter we find it is really about the butterfly effect resulting from the choices these individual’s have made.
Each believing they are in the right, though not knowing all the facts, the characters enter a state of harsh judgement rather than one of mercy and understanding.
A choice which ironically and rapidly complicates the situation for better and for worse.
