MADAME DONALDA, 36min., UK
Directed by Alan Marcus
Madame Donalda (2024, 36mins) is a postmodern operetta documentary built around the moment in June 1905 when 23-year-old Canadian soprano Pauline Lightstone was transformed from a young understudy at Covent Garden into an international star. Donalda’s performance that night opposite the world’s greatest tenor, Enrico Caruso, caused a sensation. She quickly went on to perform prominent roles in opera houses and music halls across Europe and North America. Shot in Montreal, London and Aberdeen, Scotland, the film engages with a conversation between director Alan Marcus and the Bulgarian soprano Sofia Dimitrova. Dimitrova delves inside Donalda’s artistic accomplishment in a kind of live séance between the two singers.
