Get to know the filmmaker:
1. What motivated you to make this film?
After completing my 2022 Dance Film 'Magnolia Moon', which focused heavily on the emotional arch of the main characters and had a dark, brooding atmosphere, I wanted to make a film that was fun and frivolous as an antidote. When I was approached by Paul Rabinowitz, who invited me to make a film focused on his new poetry collection ' Truth, Love and The Lines In Between', I was drawn to one poem in particular 'Dolly', which features in section two of our film. It sparked a lot of ideas in this vein that I was excited to bring to life. We ultimately used 4 of Paul's poems as the basis for the film, and from there emerged the theme of our relationship to the creative process. I love to start somewhere and let the work emerge, to discover itself, and that was definitely my process with The Lines In Between.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?
Just under a year.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
Whimsical, creative.
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
Completing filming at the beach before it got crowded. We started early but not quite early enough to have 100% clear shots. The challenge of filming in public spaces!
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
It was reassuring to hear the audience pick up on what was intentional and to be suprised by their new perspectives. I learnt al ot about the layers of the piece through hearing their feedback and interpretations.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
I have have built my career in dance, but have always loved cinema. I knew I wanted to make my own work but never felt drawn to making dance for the stage. Film seemed like the right medium for the type of movement story telling I am interested in, I think it suits my choreographic style.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
Strictly Ballroom by Baz Lurman, Disney's The Jungle Book, The Sound of Music.
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?
It's been a great experience to be a part of the festival - I love the element of receiving remote audience feedback.
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?
Very smooth.
10. What is your favorite meal?
I love Mediterranean food and will never say no to a falafel pita with hummus!
11. What is next for you? A new film?
I am currently performing full time with Punch Drunk's Sleep No More here in NYC, which is keeping me busy. I'm also hosting a monthly Dance Film Night series, co-curated and produced by my collaborator (and co-star of The Lines In Between) Julia Discenza, in which we screen recent Dance Films and offer a Q&A with the film makers. I hope to expand this to a Dance Film Festival at some point, and to also work on another Dance Film of my own soon. I have lots of ideas :)
