Get to know the filmmaker:
1. What motivated you to make this film? Many motivations. I've been a Star Wars fan since I was a little kid and after seeing so many Star Wars fan films on YouTube, thought it was a great option to dive into the universe on my own terms. To make a Star Wars film that I had always wanted to see. I also felt like it would be a good venue to further my career, by showing that I could do with an established and beloved IP. But without a doubt, the most personal reason to make this film was because of my seven-year-old son, who was a huge Star Wars fan. He passed away due to brain cancer a few years ago, and I felt like I needed to make this film for him. Star Wars: Rendezvous is dedicated to him.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? Three years. I had initially written the screenplay and showed it to friends, family and fellow filmmakers. I received very good feedback, but I felt like I needed a little more confirmation before I moved into production. I submitted the script to some screenplay competitions and started winning. This very fan fiction festival was one of the first to award me in my screenplay phase. After that, it took two more years to finish the film due to extensive preproduction and postproduction. There are close to 300 VFX shots in the finished film.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!? "Star Wars!"
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film? Exotic and remote locations were probably the most difficult aspect of making the film. The film was shot at the Bisti Badlands and at San Lorenzo Canyon, both in different parts of New Mexico offering different challenges in terms of logistics and access.
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video? I am very happy to hear that people have responded well to the film. Indeed, I have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from those who have seen the film online and at the various venues and festivals it's screened at.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films? This was probably in sixth or seventh grade. I had an epiphany. I realized that all of the things I wanted to be when I grew up where I result of the movies and television is watching as a kid. Once I realized how much influence filmmaking was having on me, I decided that was the career path for me.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life? Probably Star Wars, A New Hope. I saw this film in the theater for the first time when I was four years old and it made a huge impact. It's no wonder I would eventually make my own Star Wars fan film.
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career? Do you have any contacts at Lucasfilm??
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site? FilmFreeway has been an excellent resource.
10. What is your favorite meal? I love a well-seasoned, grilled ribeye steak. Medium rare.
11. What is next for you? A new film? I will be making a few more short films, and my feature film debut. The very next project is a short film called Angelito. It's about a 9-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a gang member like his older brother until a tragic accident forces him to grow up far too quickly.
