N-MEN: THE UNTOLD STORY, 86min., USA, Documentary
Directed by James Sweigert
The film, N-Men: The Untold Story, is an intimate look at an underground skateboard crew from Sacramento, California, which started in 1975 as a resentment against the Z-Boys and they are still going strong. The movie features never-before-seen photos and footage of the Northern California skate scene as well as testimonials on the historical importance of this crew from pro skateboarders including Tony Hawk, Tony Alva, Steve Caballero, Christian Hosoi, Tommy Guerrero and more with voice over by Josh Brolin.

I first saw the N-Men in 1978 when I became a member of Sierra Wave skateboard park in Rancho Cordova. They were older kids and they were the best skateboarders in the park. They charged harder and went bigger than anyone. They were wild. They had more underground pools than you could count. I hung out with them, skated with them, saw them at punk shows in the 80’s then I lost touch and moved to LA.
Twenty five years later I did a search to see if any of them were alive. Not only did I find them, they were still at it and they had never stopped. I learned that they had a global impact on the world of skateboarding and created the X-Games for ESPN as well as working with Tony Hawk to help get skateboarding into the Olympics for the first time in 2021.
I got to work with director/producer Stacy Peralta on Hawaiian: Legend of Eddie Aikau, a documentary about the legendary big wave surfer from the North Shore. Stacy saw my N-Men skateboard and we talked about Randy Katen and the crew. I told him they kind of raised me, taught me to skate, snowboard and surf. Stacy ultimately inspired me to finally tell the story of the N-Men.
It wasn't until 2011 that the N-Men gave me permission to share their story. Eleven years later, after digging through attics, garages and basements I have uncovered tons of never-before-seen footage of the NorCal skate scene. Josh Brolin came on board to narrate and we will be submitting the film to festivals in 2022/2023.
