LOSING FAITH, 19min., USA
Directed by Allan Wasserman
Gil, the detective who helped capture Richard Ramirez, now in his 70s, reflects on the events from the 80's to his priest as he now questions his faith. "How could God let this happen?". Michael J. Gonzales plays both Richard the Killer and Gil the detective.
Get to know producer Michael J. Gonzales:
1. What motivated you to make this film?
The director Allan Wasserman had reached out to me about writing and acting in a short about the Night Stalker case. The twist was that he wanted me to play both the Killer and also the detective that helped bring him to justice.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?
A little under 2 years. I wore a lot of hats.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
Lost Faith.
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
We shot a 30 minute film and later decided to try and shave off half if we could in editing.
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
I personally was taken back by the positive comments. It was great to hear that the essence of the story came through. (How does one stay positive, good and optimistic in a world that challenge all of those things).
But also, the comments on questionable editing choices were so valuable. We may go back and address those issues. That was very helpful and eye opening.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
Since I was in High School. It wasn’t until I read an article in the LA Times Calendar section about the film Department at LACC. I was entering the film composing scene at the time and felt it would be great way to meet filmmakers for films to score. That ended up being great idea. Not just for meeting filmmakers all over LA but also learning the craft of filmmaking.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
A Clockwork Orange
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?
The experience with your festival was pretty amazing and I am so honored. An implementation to consider Answers from LOSING FAITH Producer, Writer, Editor, Composer and Actor Michael J. Gonzales could be an in-person event or mixer. Those are always a great way to connect and promote.
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?
It's been incredible actually. I am able to stay on top of my submission easily.
10. What is your favorite meal?
Anything Mexican. :-)
11. What is next for you? A new film?
A short. It’s being written now but it’s going to be “The Odd Couple” meets “Knock at
the Cabin”.
