Get to know the filmmaker:
1. What motivated you to make this film?
Broken was born from the many experiences and exposures I have had online and in person with culture wars, and how it had affected everyone involved. I thought about how I could write and direct a piece that talks to this, and makes a statement on how far things can go. The rest evolved from there.
2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? We had deadlines we had to follow, but from beginning to end was a few months, with 4 days of shooting.
3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
Nail biting.
4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
Many obstacles but the biggest one was availability and time to shoot.
5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking
about your film in the feedback video?
It's great to see and hear how people of different backgrounds and experience took the film, and it was great to see that the audience very much picked up on what the film intended on with its story and theme.
6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
It's been a process for me over the years as I began as a novelist, but even then I envisioned that being on film. As a lover of the medium from my teenage years, I never imagined I would be in a position to make films, and as the world changed, this became a possibility.
7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
There are a few contenders for this, but if I go with "for all time", it would be Young Guns 2, which massively captured my imagination in my younger years.
8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other
festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking
career?
That's a hard one, but the biggest would be to introduce us to people who may be able to assist us with making our future films, moving to features, etc.
9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your
experiences been working on the festival platform site?
It's a great platform that works very well.
10. What is your favorite meal?
Sichuan chinese food.
11. What is next for you? A new film?
I'm working hard to get my horror and cyberpunk short films through post production and into festivals, and aside from shorts, I'm trying very hard to break into long form features.
