A pioneer of graphic art, Jim Phillips, known for his bold and visceral imagery, has left an indelible mark on the world of rock posters, surf, and skateboard art. Drawing inspiration from his life in Santa Cruz, California, Jim's journey from publishing his first artwork in Surfer Quarterly in 1962 to becoming the art director for Santa Cruz Skateboards, shaped the golden era of skateboarding.

Get to know the filmmaker:

1. What motivated you to make this film?
Growing up in the 80's I was constantly surrounded by the art of Jim Phillips. From my first skateboards to my collection of CCS catalogs.... Jim's art was not just illustrations to me... They were memories... They were emotions... And they were inspirations. I had the pleasure to meet Jim and hire him to do some logo work. After getting to know him over the years I approached him with the idea of making a documentary. I guess I wanted to express the impact Jim's art had on me and show that to everyone else through film hoping they will feel just as inspired as I did.

2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?
About 12 years

3. How would you describe your film in two words!?
Art And Life

4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?
Finding the right people to align with that could understand and see the vision.

5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?
It was really great to get some fresh eyes and fresh feedback from an audience that watched the film for the first time. It helped put things in perspective and I felt like my goals for the viewer were accomplished. It was really nice.... Thank you for that!

6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?
I studied art / illustration in school and film was always there as a hobby growing up. When I was 19 I started working in the film industry so it became a job and means of income. It sounds strange to say but the opportunity to create this film sort of presented itself to me in a series of life instances. So it wasn't really like a realization it was more like... Here you go! Don't F#$k it up!

7. What film have you seen the most in your life?
I grew up watching mostly skateboard videos and snowboard videos but if I had to pick 1 film it would have to be Office Space.

8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?
I think you guys are doing a great job... Getting as many eyes as possible on the film is always the main goal I'd think.

9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?
Very easy and streamlined.

10. What is your favorite meal?
Pancakes

11. What is next for you? A new film?
Possibly a new film... There are a few potential ideas floating around. Just waiting to see which one feels right.
