Get to know the screenwriter:
1. What is your screenplay about?
My screenplay is about a young independent woman named Steph's finishing her last year of undergrad to get into Dental School. Steph had put her career on hold to care for her dying mother. She's selling her mom's house and moving in with her alcoholic uncle, Dr. Silverman. She leans on her best friend Isaac and Crystal. Steph deals with a chaotic personal, romantic, and professional life. Her boss Dr. White is a narcissistic, chauvinist who abuses drugs. She's the glue that keeps the office afloat.
2. What genres does your screenplay fall under?
D.D.S Drama of Dental Surgeon's falls under the Drama and Romance generes.
3. Why should this screenplay be produced?
D.D.S should be made into a t.v. series because there's NOTHING like it out there. There are so many medical shows, but none about dental. Not only is it fresh, and unique, but viewers are used to seeing a doctor/patient relationship on t.v. The characters and stories are relatable. (who hasn't dealt with office politics, office romances, or a narcissist for a boss?)
4. How would you describe this script in two words?
Courageous, relatable
5. What movie have you seen the most times in your life?
The only movie that comes to mind that I have seen a million times is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (Gene Wilder version). No offense to Johnny Depp.
6. How long have you been working on this screenplay?
I've been working on this pilot for approx 12 months. In the past 6 months, is where I went full steam ahead.
7. How many stories have you written?
I'm a newbie! This is my first time writing... ever!
8. What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the
most times in your life?)
My favorite song at the moment is Last Night by Morgan Wallen.
9. What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?
Being a first-time writer, the biggest obstacle is getting out of my head and letting the creative juices flow naturally. I had to write on my bathroom mirror in washable markers words of encouragement to myself. Another obstacle is working full-time( at a dental office) and not being able to dedicate full days to the script. So I thought, well if I only work on it 20-30 minutes in the morning and then back at it again in the evening, it's better than 0 minutes.
10. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?
Acting is my first passion!!!
11. You entered your screenplay via FilmFreeway. What has been your
experiences working with the submission platform site?
For a first-time writer and entering any competition, my experience has been a good one.
12. What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings
on the initial feedback you received?
My initial thought was how do I get this out there and what's the best way I can do that with the limited resources I have? I googled competitions. When I was going through the submission process, I thought to myself, I'm not entering to win. I'm entering to gain exposure and for someone to see my potential. So far, that frame of mind has been working for me. I've always been pretty good with constructive criticism. Sure, at times I felt sad or some of the things can be hard to hear, but it never stopped me. I was always told that this has potential, but I need to polish it up. Every time I have, it's gotten better and I've also grown from this opportunity as well.
