Director Statement
Steve Socki Aritst’s Statement Oct 2017
"Hallowstide" is a non-narrative animated film; it is intended to be viewed as a visual poem. I was inspired by the poetry of Wallace Stevens, especially Sea Surface, Full of Clouds. I responded to his use of abstract association between natural imagery and human emotions.
My images developed from watercolor sketches of organic, watery life forms in tide pools, with rippling, reflective surfaces. I animated these natural rhythms into dreamy, flowing 'transformational' cycles. Shapes evolve into haunting and ethereal imagery, suggesting dancing spirits reacting to one another. The rhythmic structure is based on the theme of ebb and flow. The spectral characters suggest ascension between separate worlds.
